A decade ago, surgical tech workers made up just over half of all workers in those jobs.
The survey also revealed that the top 20% of medical technicians had a median annual salary of $73,000 in 2020.
The top 20%, however, made up more than 40% of surgical workers, and about 70% of their compensation.
The 20% median salary was also slightly lower than that of surgical technicians.
The second highest median salary of surgical techs was $72,000 for a nurse, while the third highest was $65,000 paid to a physician assistant.
For a surgical technician, the median salary is $68,000 and the top of the income scale is $84,000 (according to Glasshouse).
Surgical Techs Work Long Hours The American Medical Association says the typical surgical technician working two to three hours a day in the operating room can earn about 80% more than an equivalent surgical technician who works one to two hours.
Surgically trained surgical technicians often work a three-day week.
A full-time average surgical technic in the US makes about three times as much as an equivalent technician in China, according Glassdoor data.
